For Mother's Day 2008 I went with other BU seniors on a day trip to the Vineyard as one of the "senior week" activities. We left at 7:30 AM and got to the ferry on Cape Cod by 9 in time for the 9:30 ferry to MV. The ferry takes 45 mins and it is a nice passenger/few car ferry.It was a perfect day, 60 degrees and sunny, no humidly and a cool ocean breeze. My friend Ben and I decided we were going to try and rent bikes for the day. We found a bike rental shop in Vineyard Haven to the left of where the ferry dropped us off. I was very satisfied with their service. $21 for the entire day for a nice "hybrid" bike, Giro helmet and bike lock. friendly staff too.
Ben and I rode all the way to Katama and had lunch on South Beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Here is a map so you can see how far we rode: Map
After a nap on the beach we rode back to Oak Bluffs via Beach Road which is where a lot of Jaws was filmed according to our friend Kathy (who we met on the ride to South Beach) and my friend Jeff who lives on the Vineyard.
The ride along the coast from South Beach to Oak Bluffs was very nice between the Nantucket Sound and Sengekontacket (not sure how to pronounce that) Pond. We chilled in Oak Bluff and did a little shopping, some nice and cheap clothing stores with Martha's Vineyard logos. Then we rode back to Vineyard Haven, returned the bikes by 4:45 and had time to go to a good cafe on Main Street called Mocha Mott's which had a great oatmeal raisin cookie and some sweet local graffiti style artwork on display.
This was my first time to the Vineyard and I highly recommend going on a nice spring day like this b/c we had the beaches to ourselves which I feel is rare in the summer months. The bike paths are nicely paved but you are still sure to get a good workout biking around if you don't bike regularly like myself b/c the Vineyard is a lot bigger than I thought. I would love to start biking more. We will see. I need a bike first. All in all a very nice day trip to get out of the city.
FYI Their was a lot of traffic on the way back to Boston. I didn't see if there was an accident or what but I was thankful that we were on a coach bus and I wasn't driving. I will have a lot a driving ahead of me though in a week as I am driving cross country with a friend after my graduation next Sunday.
